St Joseph’s welcomes you to the wondrous world of Performing Arts!

Students are immersed in a stimulating environment and given opportunities to engage their mind, body and emotions in a collaborative and communal expression of all that it means to be human. Through rehearsal and performance they explore and present themes and ideas. They discover their own voice and with support and encouragement, grow in confidence.

Participating in Performing Arts tasks assists students to develop a strong sense of individualism, self reflection and esteem. Using Assessment Grids they are able to manage and track their own learning, whist working towards the goals of mastering and sharing their skills. Students learn to critique their work and that of others, providing and listening to feedback, identifying strengths and weaknesses, which in turn can be used to modify their performance.

Involvement in our St Joseph’s biennial School Production builds strong relationships between students, Learning Advisors and our community. Also, it opens the door for students to delve into Stagecraft Elements; Lighting, Sound and Costume Design. They collaborate to create theatrical props and audio visual backdrops. Students have input into ‘Front of House’ duties; online ticketing, marketing, ushering and programming. Throughout the year, Performing Arts Incursions heighten students’ enthusiasm and assist in consolidating new learning.

Performing Arts Education at St Joseph’s not only provides opportunities for students to develop creative passions it furthers their communication, language and leadership skills in unique ways which inspire individualism.

Performing Arts enables students to grow in confidence and think positively about themselves and learning.

Exposure to the disciplines, Dance, Drama and Music, allows students to learn as artist and as audience, through making and responding.

  • Dance is a way of moving that uses the body as an instrument of expression and communication. Students work in a variety of groupings. They experience making decisions and articulating their thinking, whilst reproducing and creating routines. Dance awakens new perceptions.
  • Drama involves students engaging in real and imagined events through play making, improvisation, role plays, mime and performances. Drama enables students to explore, shape and represent their ideas and feelings whist developing problem solving skills, respect and consideration for others.
  • Music involves students listening and experimenting with a range of sounds. They focus on rhythm, beat, pitch, form and structure. Students sing and play musical instruments. They present and perform their music for a variety of audiences developing their work to communicate ideas and feelings to engage listeners. Students use Music as a vehicle to discover a range of different cultures.
